Marco Scutaro was traded to the Giants from the Rockies for Charlie Culberson. The journeyman infielder now has a home and is signed to a 3-year/$20 million deal, or in other words, what Barry Zito will be making in 2013 alone. If you trade for a guy mid-season and then give him three guaranteed years, he must’ve done something good. Actually, he did plenty of things good. Or well. Whatever, I majored in Japanese.

We, the fans, know that the legend of Marco Scutaro will likely come from the Postseason of 2012 alone, but his two different seasons were just as remarcoble (ha! get it?!?). With the Rockies (95 games) and the Giants (61 games) in the regular season, you have these differences:

Slash line: .271/.324/.361 with COL vs. .362/.385/.473 with SF

OPS+: 73 and 145

2B: 16 and 16

wOBA: .303 and .370

wRC+: 75 and 137

fWAR: 0.6 and 1.9

So much for that Coors Field advantage and everything, but maybe playing for a winning team can just change the way you prepare, I don’t know.

After his relatively quiet NLDS, Scutaro made up for it in a huge way by getting on base more than half the time against the Cardinals, and being part of a revenge squad that took out Matt Holliday and his St. Louis buddies, while in the process, being a part of an image that will live in San Francisco Giants history forever.

The San Francisco Giants came into the free agent frenzy hoping to retain three key players – Jeremy Affeldt, Angel Pagan and Marco Scutaro. They are now three for three after coming to terms with Marco Scutaro this evening.

Oct 22, 2012; San Francisco, CA, USA; San Francisco Giants second baseman Marco Scutaro (19) celebrates with the MVP trophy after defeating the St. Louis Cardinals 9-0 in game seven of the 2012 NLCS to advance to the world series at AT&T Park – ©Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The Giants signed Scutaro to a three year, $20 million dollar deal despite a hefty surge from the St. Louis Cardinals (and New York Yankees) who had hoped to lure the infielder with the semi-short flight to Miami and Spring Training homebase in Florida, where Scutaro lives. However, the third year and lure of playing for the World Champs proved to be too much apparently as the two sides came to their agreement. It’s been reported that the Cardinals offered Scutaro more annual salary ($8 million) but would only put two years on the table.

Just recently 37, Scutaro will finish out his deal (assuming there is no buyout on the third year, which isn’t a given) days before his 40th birthday, but the Giants felt the risk was worth the deal, despite an initial offer of two years and a vesting option.

We’ll have more on the re-signing as well as thoughts on the Angel Pagan move when the Winter Meetings die down.

Now the Giants will continue their search for a left fielder to pair with Gregor Blanco – with names like Nick Swisher (although the Giants have already said he’s too expensive), Ichiro and more dancing through the recent rumor mill.
