According to Hank Schulman, the San Francisco Giants and Manager Bruce Bochy are close to announcing an agreement on an extension that will keep the Skipper in orange and black through the 2016 season.

Per Schulman:

SABEAN and Bochy extensions to be announced within the hour. Thru 2016 I hear. <s>#</s>sfgiants.

Bochy has a career record of 1454-1444 during his tenures in San Diego and San Francisco, good for a winning percentage of .502. In San Francisco however, Boch has delivered far better results, returning a 503-469 record, good for a .517 winning percentage and of course two of those fancy shiny things you put on your fingers.

In addition to the solid record, Bochy also holds a Manager of the Year award in his resume which he received during the San Diego Padres’ 1996 World Series run, along with three third place finishes and one second place finish for the award.

Bochy and the crew may want to hope for a few more first place finishes before his extension runs out in 2016 as anytime the Giants have placed first in the National League West under Bochy’s helm, they’ve ended up on the right side of the seasons final out.

No word on the financial details, though, he’ll be undoubtedly compensated well given his recent history.

General Manger Brian Sabean was also extended through 2016, keeping Nike and their Jordan brand tracksuits in operation for at least three more years.

Note – there appears to be some confusion on the reports, there apparently are no option years as initially reported.

In the past few days, speculation led many to believe that Bruce Bochy was having a difficult time deciding what players would fill the final spots on the Giants’ NLDS roster. Knowing Aubrey Huff would need a pinch runner if he was to reach base, many assumed that Boch would add a speedster to the roster for any crucial running scenario. Apparently, Bochy wasn’t comfortable in doing so as he gave the final spot to reliever Guillermo Mota.

September 20, 2012; San Francisco, CA, USA; San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy (15) in the dugout during the fourth inning against the Colorado Rockies at AT&T Park – ©Kelley L Cox-US PRESSWIRE

The final roster, announced this evening, is as follows:

Pitchers: Affeldt, Bumgarner, Cain, Casilla, Kontos, Lincecum, Lopez, Mijares, Mota, Romo, Vogey & Zito

Batters: OF Blanco, Nady, Pagan, Pence | INF Arias, Belt, Crawford, Huff, Sandoval, Scutaro, Theriot | C Posey, Sanchez

The only three candidates to make the roster as speed guys were Emmanuel Burriss, Justin Christian or Francisco Peguero. And while all three certainly can motor around the bases, none of them are what you’d define as high quality base runners – something you need if you’re actually trying to steal a base in a crucial spot. Not to mention, there would be little to zero role for the above mentioned players outside of the pinch running duties, which is essentially a wasted spot if they aren’t pinch running.

Guillermo Mota, who did receive the final spot over the race cars, didn’t exactly earn it with his very sub-par season but it appears Bochy felt more comfortable with an extra arm than extra wheels against a powerhouse lineup, with up to three of the games taking place in the offense heavy Great American Ballpark.
