The San Francisco Giants kickoff the official second half of the baseball season today, beginning a 3-game series with the Miami Marlins. Tonight’s game begins at 4:10 pm PST, and has a match up of Madison Bumgarner (10-7, 3.47 ERA) facing Nathan Eovaldi (5-4, 3.61 ERA).
The Giants have hit well against Eovaldi with a lifetime .392 average off him. Pablo Sandoval, Hunter Pence, Michael Morse, Tyler Colvin, and Hector Sanchez are all hitting above .500 against him lifetime, while Buster Posey and Brandon Crawford are only hitting .200 off him. Eovaldi is 1-3 in 4 games and has a 12.27 ERA lifetime against San Francisco.
As for Bumgarner, he’s fair a little better against active Marlins player. They’re hitting .310 off him, with Giancarlo Stanton going 7-for-11 against him with five doubles. Backup catcher Jeff Mathis is the only Marlin with a home run off Bumgarner, but it was also the only time he faced him. He’s not in the starting lineup tonight. Bumgarner is 0-2 in 4 games and has a 5.09 ERA lifetime against Miami.

Miami Marlins Lineup for 7/18/14
There is no Marco Scutaro for the Giants tonight. That’s a huge concern since he’s had nearly a week off to rest his back. Angel Pagan is also still missing from the lineup. No word yet on when Pagan will return. Brandon Belt was dropped from the 2-hole for Joe Panik today. I imagine Bruce Bochy wants to try Panik out there since he’s he’ll likely have to fill in quite a bit for Scutaro unless the Giants make a move soon, like picking up Dan Uggla. Belt isn’t really a #2 hitter anyway, so we’ll see if this experiment pays off.Panik is a much more natural fit for that spot, that is, if he can get on base.
