Week 1 of the Major League Baseball season is in the books, Eric Nathanson and I had our first episode of Around the Foghorn Podcast recapping the week that was for the San Francisco Giants.
One of the biggest issues that I had from the opening week was instant replay, more specifically one certain play that did not go the Giants way. With Diamondbacks outfielder A.J. Pollock on first base, Giants starter Matt Cain turned and fired to first on a pickoff attempt. It looked as he had Pollock picked off and was called safe. Manager Bruce Bochy came out to challenge the call, upon further review the play stood and Pollock was called safe.
Unfortunately this was not the only play involving Pollack this inning that could have, and should have been reviewed. A couple batters after being “picked off”, Cain threw a passed ball and there was a play at the plate and Pollock was called safe. It looked Pollock had slid into Cain’s glove before ever touching the plate, Bochy had used his one and only challenge on the pick-off and could not challenge the play at the plate. This tweet from Ken, got me thinking and should be something that MLB should look into.

Back to the first week for the Giants. It was a successful week, that saw them play 4 games in Arizona versus the Diamondbacks, and 3 in Los Angeles versus the Dodgers. Finished the week 5-2 and one half game in first place.
This week, the Giants open their home portion of the regular season with 3 more versus the Diamondbacks and 3 versus the Colorado Rockies.
