Do you like AT&T Park? Do you like hockey? Well the two may come together in January 2015. Per Alex Pavlovic of the San Jose Mercury News, officials from the San Jose Sharks and the San Francisco Giants have had preliminary discussions regarding hosting the NHL’s “Winter Classic” an outdoor hockey game that takes place in stadiums during the winter. Yankee Stadium and Dodger Stadium hosted three NHL games this year.
The Winter Classic has primarily been an “original six” team and created attendance records with stadiums being 2, 3, 4 or even 5 times larger than arenas. The most recent outdoor game held in Michigan at Michigan Stadium or “The Big House” hosted the Detroit Red Wings and the Toronto Maple Leaves with an attendance of 105,491. That is over six times the capacity of the San Jose Sharks Arena the SAP Center.
The article stated that San Jose Sharks are looking at AT&T Park, Stanford Stadium and Levis Stadium as possible locations. The Sharks have not been awarded the 2015 Winter Classic but, are finalist as the Winter Classic in Los Angeles was considered a success. If you are a Hockey fan like I am it will be real exciting to see outdoor Hockey in the Bay Area.
