Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle wrote a feature on San Francisco Giants reliever Derek Law. Law was the closer for the San Jose Giants last season, lit up the Arizona Fall League, and has been turning heads ever since, including this Spring.
In 22 games last summer as the closer for Class-A San Jose, after a promotion from low-A Augusta, Ga., the right-hander struck out 45 batters in 25 2/3 innings and walked one.
That’s right. One.
I’m not going to sum up the article except to say it’s a great read. It gives you a sense of Law’s motivation, family history, and what we have to look forward to as Giants fans.

I mean, one walk in 45 batters? I will take that in a closer any day of the week. Of all the prospects out there this Spring, including Crick and Escobar, I’m most excited to see Law pitch.
At the end of the San Jose Giants season last fall, as Law was leaving, he said he expected to be in Richmond this coming season. However, with the attention he’s getting, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in Fresno sooner rather than later. Also, just for good fun, we took him a slice of birthday cake last season during their final game…which also happened to be his birthday.
