Happy Spring Training!
Pitchers and catchers just reported to Scottsdale Stadium yesterday, and things are already underway for the San Francisco Giants. We’ll fill you in with all you need to know about how things are going with the G-Men.
Buster Posey has taken his first swings of the spring.
Andrew Baggarly reporting (via Chris Cotillo) that the Giants have signed Mark Teahen to a minor league contract with no spring training invite. Teahen last played in the big leagues in 2011 for the Toronto Blue Jays. Last season he spent his time with the York Revolution in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball.
In case you missed today’s article about Pablo Sandoval by Chris Corbett, be sure to read it. Most importantly here, Sandoval came to camp in shape and has noticeably slimmed own. Oh, and apparently Buster Posey, Matt Cain, and Hunter Pence had a “come to Jesus” meeting with him last fall about getting in shape.
Along those same lines, Cain shared with Baggarly that he spoke with Sandoval from “personal experience,” having received the same talk from teammates and the front office just a few short years ago.
Cain spoke from personal experience when he talked to Sandoval last year. Just a few years ago, the right-hander was on the other end of the conversation. The front office, and a teammate or two, got in his face about slimming down and taking his work between starts a little more seriously.
Clearly it worked for Cain. We can hope the same for Pablo. Also, Sandoval talks about getting in shape.
Finally, it’s the first Spring Training in a long time without a “Barry” in the clubhouse. That’s a sad thought for me.
