NLW Movers And Shakers In August

Each week through the end of the 2013 season, I’ll be recapping National League West transactions including those placed on waivers, DFA’ed, cleared, acquired/signed and released players.

The rumor is that the Giants will be making some moves in the off-season and many beat writers/reporters doubt the same team will be returning next year. It’s good to keep an eye out on who is available and who picks them up. Tim Lincecum, Hunter Pence, Javier Lopez are a few of the 2014 free agents currently with the Giants in 2013.

Here are some moves and shakes in the NLW so far in August:

DFA Limbo

  • Jeff Francoeur (Giants, LF/RF), DFA’ed on 8/20/13, released 8/21/13 (decision by 8/29/13)
  • Sean O’Sullivan (Padres, RHP) DFA’ed 8/19/13 (decision by 8/28/13)

Placed on Waivers (rumored)

  • Rafael Betancourt (Rockies, RHP) Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports says the Rockies are planning to exercise the $4.25MM club option in 2012 so they’ll need a good trade/offer to move him. (8/22/13)
  • Chase Headley (Padres, 3B) He has a $8.575M contract this year, will enter his final year of arbitration eligibility next season. (8/21/13)

Cleared Waivers

  • Barry Zito (Giants) – Cleared waivers on August 14, still had $5.14MM remaining on his $20MM salary. (8/14/13)
  • Brandon League (Dodgers, RHP) – cleared waivers on August 14. League is owed $1.5MM for the rest of this season, $7.5MM in 2014, and $7.5MM in 2015 with a vesting player option for 2016. (8/14/13)
  • Tony Sipp (Diamondbacks, LHP) – Cleared waivers and has been optioned to Triple-A Reno. (8/4/13)
