California falls to Carolina League 12-2 in Class A All-Star Game in San Jose

The Carolina All-Stars defeated the California All-Stars 12-2 on Tuesday evening at Municipal Stadium in San Jose, CA, home of the Class A Advanced Affiliate San Jose Giants.  San Jose Giants manager Andy Skeels led the California League against Lynchburg Hillcats’ manager, Luis Salazar.  CAR scored five runs in both the 4th and 5th innings and CAL committed a record four errors in the game.

RHP Luke Jackson (selected by the Texas Rangers in the first round, 45th overall, of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft) secured the win for the Carolina League while RHP Drew Granier (selected by the Oakland Athletics in the 32nd round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft) took the loss for the California League.

As background, the WP Jackson was rated the Rangers’ No. 17 prospect entering the 2012 season by MLB.com.  Jackson averaged 9.4 strikeouts per nine innings with Class A Hickory in 2011.  LP Granier was ranked as the A’s No. 18 prospect by MLB.com entering the 2013 season. He has led the A’s Minor Leaguers in innings pitched (162 2/3) in 2012 while ranking second in strikeouts (167) and wins (11).
Jeremy Farrell (DH/CAR) selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the eighth round of the 2008 amateur entry draft and Robert Kral (C/CAL) selected by the San Diego Padres in the 10th round of the 2011 draft, hit HRs in the 2nd and 3rd innings respectively.
The San Jose Giants, often referred to as the ‘baby Giants,’  had eight players selected for the California League All-Star game this season. Outfielder Devin Harris, left-handed pitchers Ty Blach, Edwin Escobar and Josh Osich, first baseman Angel Villalona (DH) and catcher Jeff Arnold all took the field Tuesday at Municipal Stadium. Right-handed pitcher Hunter Strickland and infielder Ryan Cavan were selected but were unable to participate due to injury.
The San Jose Giants have clinched the first half North Division title with a 5-4, 10-inning victory over the Visalia Rawhide last Friday evening.  That victory secured a spot in the playoffs for a California League record 10th consecutive season.
