With an empty NLCS champagne bottle in tow, a freshly-shaved Hunter Pence made his debut on Conan Tuesday evening. Originally, he explained, his intention was to secure a Division Series bat for the late-night host.
“I went 0-for-8 with this bat in the first two games,” he said. “Yeah, I was like, ‘This is perfect for Conan.'”
After the ensuing banter and gushing over Hunter’s three-hit broken bat single, Pence elaborated on his walk-up music selections. During his time with the Astros, he chose Katy Perry’s “California Gurls,” deeming it among the cheesiest songs available.
“Honestly,” said Pence, “it was so funny that you couldn’t take it seriously, so I’d be so relaxed I hit really well.”
According to DesignatedHits.com, Hunter returned to his pre-Perry ways this season with a mix of AC/DC, Volbeat, and Skrillex. However, he sought out the singer’s recently released movie, Katy Perry: Part of Me, on a flight to St. Louis during the postseason.
While his self consciousness got the best of him in what Conan termed a macho environment, Pence revealed Ryan Vogelsong’s thoughts on the film. In his best Vogelsong Philly accent: “You know, I watched that Katy Perry: Part of Me movie, and, uh, man, it was really awesome.”
There you have it. The shaggy, wild-eyed Hunter Pence of the postseason is now a clean-cut, still wild-eyed man with a recently developed affinity for Katy Perry.
