Perfection: Whiffs in PGs

Inspired by a tweet noting how many whiffs Felix Hernandez got in his perfect game today (26), I thought I’d take a look at the number of whiffs (swing-and-a-miss) in perfect games from pitchers done from Mark Buehrle (7/23/2009) through today’s King Felix outing.

Mark Buehrle (July 23, 2009): 8 (4-seamer — 3, Changeup — 2, Cutter — 2, 2-semaer — 1)

Dallas Braden (May 9th, 2010): 5 (4-seamer — 2, Changeup — 3)

Roy Halladay (May 29th, 2010): I’ve heard 8, but can’t find the data for some reason

Philip Humber (April 21st, 2012): 14 (4-seamer — 3, Changeup — 1, Slider — 3, Curveball — 7)

Matt Cain (June 13th, 2012): 14 (4-seamer — 8, Changeup — 2, Slider –1, Curveball — 2, 2-seamer — 1)

Felix Hernandez (August 15th, 2012): 26 (“Fastball” — 1, Sinker — 1, Changeup — 9, Slider — 5, Curveball — 10)

Kind of funny that the Rays were involved in 3 of these perfectos, but Felix’s 26 whiffs are the outlier here. Amazing work he put together today against Tampa Bay. If you get the chance to watch a replay, I’d recommend doing it.
