Before speedster Michael Bourn was sent to Atlanta during the ’11 trade deadline, the San Francisco Giants were interested in bringing the leadoff man to the Bay. Unfortunately, the Houston Astros‘ price tag was deemed too excessive so the native Texan went elsewhere.
Now, with free agency ahead for Bourn, the Giants again have their eyes set on the 29 year old outfielder.
Lost in the shuffle of the All-Star game was Jon Heyman’s (I know, I know) report that the Giants were intrigued with Bourn’s skill-set, skills that they hope would flourish in the big parks of the National League West.
Bourn hasn’t had any contractual talks with Atlanta yet (although they should be coming shortly), but with an already hefty payroll many pundits and analysts question if the Braves will be able to hang onto Bourn without making some other financial moves.
For the Giants, they could have some openings in their outfield with the contracts of impending free agents Melky Cabrera and Angel Pagan set to expire along with available funds thanks to the handful of larger contracts (like Aubrey Huff, Brian Wilson, Jeremy Affeldt, Freddy Sanchez, etc) that will run their course.
