Things That Haven’t Happened Since…

by Giants

Most everybody’s excited about FanFest and also the Media Day the Giants held at AT&T Park today, and you should be: baseball’s comin’ back, baby! That is something that should always be celebrated. Earlier today on my Twitter account I was going through some things that haven’t happened for a while. I’m going to expand upon that here because gosh darnit, I find it interesting.

The San Francisco Giants (not the New York franchise) have not had a player ________ in a season since: (**Denotes single season record)

With 200 hits — Rich Aurilia in 2001 with 206

**Willie Mays with 208 in 1958

Hit better than .350 (that qualified) — **Barry Bonds in 2002 when he hit .370 (amongst all players with 500+ PAs)

With 30+ SBs — Dave Roberts in 2007 with 31

Jul. 22, 2008; San Francisco, CA, USA; San Francisco Giants outfielder Dave Roberts before the game against the Washington Nationals at AT

With OVER 40 SBs — Darren Lewis with 46 in 1993

With 50+ SBs — Brett Butler with 51 in 1990

**1979 Billy north with 58… can you tell I find SBs exciting?

Who didn’t have a batter with a WAR above 4.0 — 2007 (Barry Bonds, 3.7)

Someone with over 100 RBI — Barry Bonds in 2004 with 101

May 6, 2011; San Francisco, CA, USA; Hall of fame infielder Orlando Cepeda signs autographs in the dugout before the game between the San Francisco Giants and the Colorado Rockies at AT

**1961 Orlando Cepeda had 142

Someone with over 700 PAs — 1990 Brett Butler with 732

**Bobby Bonds in 1970 with 745

A starter not named Tim Lincecum with over a 10 K/9 — Jason Schmidt in 2004 at 10.04

**Timmy is the record holder at 10.51 in his first of two Cy seasons in 2008

A starter (from beginning to end) have a 5.00+ ERA — 2008 Jonathan Sanchez at 5.01

July 20, 2011; San Francisco, CA, USA; San Francisco Giants owner William Neukom (left) talks to former pitcher Kirk Rueter (right) during the fifth inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers at AT

**1999 Kirk Rueter had a 5.41 ERA and had just a little lower 5.01 FIP that year. There’s a snake in my boot!

Have a pitcher that recorded/was awarded 20+ Wins — 1993 tandem of John Burkett and Bill Swift

**1968 Juan Marichal had 26. 2011 AL MVP Justin Verlander just 1 behind.

June 26, 2010; San Francisco, CA, USA; San Francisco Giants former player Juan Marichal waves to the crowd during a pregame ceremony to honor Milton Irvin before the start of the Giants game against the Boston Red Sox at AT

Could any of those barriers be broken in 2012? Possibly. If the offense ever wakes up you could have 3-4 20 win pitchers. Could K/9 be broken by young Madison Bumgarner? Melky Cabrera had 204 hits in 2011, could he repeat it in 2012? Angel Pagan had 32 SBs last year — can he run the bases with the Orange and Black, too? Much to be seen as we head into FanFest weekend! Less than 2 months to Opening Day!
