There was little doubt that Ryan Vogelsong wouldn’t return to San Francisco for the upcoming season (and beyond), but it was still nice to hear when the storybook pitcher signed on the dotted line this past week. So with Vogelsong back in black and orange, it’s time to speculate on his 2012 season.
Many outside of San Francisco are still suspect about Vogelsong’s game, which is understandable given the circumstances but looking at his ’11 stats, you’d be hard pressed to find any significant flaws that would result in a Vogelsong revert.
Yes, Vogelsong did have a slightly elevated WHIP for a player with his low ERA, but that speaks to the type of pitcher Vogelsong is – he himself admits how much he buckles down when there are runners on base.
With a rough start in Los Angeles near seasons end and a stinker back at AT&T versus his former mates in the Pirates, Voggy’s second half numbers did elevate over his first half All-Star campaign, but taking away those two poor starts and his second half looked very similar to his first. No matter the result, whenever Vogelsong took the mound, he kept the Giants in the game which is all you can ask for a pitcher on the back half of your rotation.
While it seems improbable for Vogelsong to repeat his 2011, there’s no doubt Voggy has the talent to be very solid arm in 2012 – so how say you Giant fans? What’s his 2012 going to look like?
