While Jose Reyes is currently rolling around in money that not even an armored car would hold, it’s worth noting that the Giants did make a play for the electric shortstop, even though their efforts were quickly shot down.
Reyes agent Peter Greenberg on Giants’ interest: “There were some early discussions…They loved the player but just didn’t have the money.”
Silly as it is, knowing the Giants made an effort and simply couldn’t afford him makes me feel better than had they just ignored the situation, knowing their financial issues.
Of course – I’d feel a lot better than that right now if the Giants weren’t paying Barry Zito a Scrooge McDuck sum and offering IOU’s to potential free agents.
